Dragonfly Frederic S Durbin 9780441013388 Books

This is without exception my favorite work of fantasy horror. It is a journey into the underworld-otherworld where there is not only death and darkness, but also love, duty and joy. Halloween becomes something so much more than a goofy holiday, and the escalation of the tale is enthralling and subtle. I recommend this book to every one of my friends with an interest in horror, fantasy or magical realism. The violence is startling and shocking not in a gratuitous way, but because of the impact on credible characters and the narrative. There is no overt sexual theme or content, but this is subliminally and inherently present in any such exploration of love and fear, beauty, life and death. This book is one of those times where the fairy tale ascends to art.

Dragonfly Frederic S Durbin 9780441013388 Books Reviews

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Frederic S. Durbin at a local library and traded books with him. I have just finished reading his book, Dragonfly, and it turned out to be an excellent book to read in the weeks leading up to Halloween. It tells the adventures of Dragonfly, a young girl who discovers a phantasmagorical underground realm beneath the basement of her Uncle's funeral home. Sam Hain (as in Samhain, the Celtic Halloween), its evil leader, sends monsters up to steal children and poison the dreams of humanity. It is one of the most original tales I have read in ages, and it stands out from the other fantasy books I have read during the past decade in terms of the author's descriptions of this subterranean world. While the author's vision is highly creative and fascinating, it is his descriptions that stand out. He is as much an artist as he is an author; he paints with words, and I find myself somewhat grateful that I read the book in paperback rather than on my usual tablet because I would otherwise have found myself constantly highlighting beautifully crafted phrases, sentences, and paragraphs for future contemplation and enjoyment rather than simply enjoying being immersed in such a wonderful world. Although the heroine of the book is an adolescent girl, readers of all ages should find this a wonderfully fantastic, if frighteningly evil, world in which to while away one's autumn evenings. This book is a rare Halloween treat best savored wrapped in a warm blanket when the moon is full, the naked branches of trees tap upon the windows, and the crackle of the fire competes with the creaks of aging joists and settling staircases. Grab a mug of hot chocolate, settle back in your chair, and enjoy your trip to the dark world of Harvest Moon.
I reread this book from time to time because it is so good. It is not just a fantasy book, but a very clever one at that, with vivid characters and definitely some very unique elements to the story line.
This work has been mischaracterized by being labeled "children's fiction". (About children does not mean childish, simple or without deep resounding truths and emotions.) Rather like placing Mozart & his piano concertos in the jazz section, Mr. Durbin's tale has been horribly classified by his publishers.

Not to fear, dear writer & readers, this tome was first on my Christmas list to those with depth, imagination & an awareness of the soul. It is currently being brought into the lives of many outstanding, thinking students who will spread this book like wildfire.

This story is dark, powerful and haunting, much more than a view of Halloween, it is the perpetual night of the soul. My personal advise to the new reader-do not visit this book during the winter in the cold, lightless days. Mr. Durbin's voice(the printed words rapidly melt away)may not allow you to exit easily. His images evoke the lonely places we do not want to acknowledge; they are certainly not where we wish to linger and yet, they hold us without mercy until the end.

Mr. Durbin, if you write it, they will come.
Exciting book! Wonderful author- read the author’s other books; they are all fantastic.
This book? Be careful. It probably won't be the first edition, first printing by Arkham House. It's the SF book club edition. So if your'e an Arkham House collecter you'll be dissapointed. There's a ton of the BCE's that they're substituting for this. I ordered this book twice and still ended up with the BCE. The picture you see is also a tad bit smaller than the original.

BCE.......Dragonfly (SFBC #37506, Jun 2001, 298pp, hc, cover by Jason Van Hollander) Reprint (Arkham House 1999) dark fantasy novel of a girl who enters a macabre underground realm. This is similar to the Arkham House edition, except it lacks a price and has the SFBC number on the back jacket.

I gave it 4 stars because I enjoyed the story very much.
