People of the Wolf attempts to depict and understand the lives of humans struggling to survive the ice age. It does a good job of describing the battle of these early people against cold, hunger and each other. However, the over-emphasis on mysticism and the portrayal of mystic occurrances as reality are unconvincing and undercut the realistic elements of the story. Dreams are shown to predict events. Visions lead to practical actions. Dreamers are valued as crucial to the survival of the tribe in the struggle against nature. The only questions seems to be which characters are strong, genuine dreamers and which are not. I presume the way the author chose to depict that mystical element was meant to reflect the viewpoint of the main characters. For me, at least, it didn't work. I was never able to suspend my disbelief to really get into the story. It is one thing to provide an understanding of the mystical beliefs of the key characters; it is another to appear to be asking the reader to join in those beliefs.

People of the Wolf The First North Americans series Book 1 Kathleen O'Neal Gear W Michael Gear 9780812521337 Books Reviews

This was a fascinating story. It's main drawback was that the reader had to buy the next book to find out what happened.
This was the first of the People books. I bought it from Book of the Month Club years ago and therefore I have it in Hardback. I also bought it in paperback and have a first edition and signed by the authors. So you cannot be surprised that I also bought it when it first came out on . Since it was first written years ago, I cannot help but wonder if archaeologists haven't come up with new information about how those first people came across the "bridge" from what is now Russia.
This book is the first of a series by the Gears that is essential to anyone wanting to know anything about the progenitors of today's American Indian peoples in North America. There are currently over 20 books in the series and they are not lock step. You can read any of them, anytime and enjoy the series...although, it does help to read this one first...Well written books such as this deserve all the stars I can give them...
I've enjoyed the Gears' books since I first read The Anasazi Mysteries which is still my favorite of this time period. This one is good as well but had a different feel to it. I enjoyed the characters and the conflicts in the story. Books like this always spark my curiosity to find out more about this age. This time is centered on the migration of the first people across the Bering land bridge into North America. A very sketchy time for humans, and you get a good sense of how tough it was for these people.
This particular book held me throughout the reading and I went on to read all the others. Have passed them onto several other people who equally enjoyed them. Yes, some of the other books do become a little predictable...but this review is about People of the Wolf. Basically, the story is based on the authors' viewpoint on how humans may have migrated into the Americas creating a fictitional story around the event. Drama and superstition along with all of our fears and weaknesses have been throughout time. Only the situations change. Since the authors do make the history of man their careers, all the stories follow fairly closely to the accepted opinions held on the migration. I read this and the others not as much for the history, but just because I enjoyed the stories.
This is not my usual fare, but was loaned to me by a friend. I found the book so interesting that I immediately purchased a copy for myself along with the rest of the series! I am not a history buff and usually do not spend much time reading history. Yet this historical fiction of the people of the North American continent caught my imagination and provided grist for the mill in a recent presentation I made on the origins of consciousness. A very well written story with detail of the lives of our ancient ancestors and how we might have lived, evolved, and dreamed. It is refreshing to have a shared hero and heroine, with the story of how our patriarchal society might have also evolved from the life of hunter-gatherers.
The Gears bring their considerable knowledge to bare in the weaving of this intriguing story of our heritage. It is obvious that they have paid attention to the details and are trying to put together the most plausible explanation of how life might have been in the transition from the last ice age. The people live in clans and are dependent upon each other for survival. They struggled for leadership just as any other group of humans and fought over the viability for the best ideas of survival. They fought change, they tried hard to maintain their contact with the spiritual side of existence and they were deeply respectful of life.
We follow the mammoth hunters as they struggle for survival during the stress of "others" forcing them from their normal hunting grounds and camps. They struggle with the balance of peaceful coexistence and warring to protect the life they know. And then they face the incredible challenge of going against all their accumulated knowledge to follow Wolf Dreamer under the ice to a new land. In many ways, this is a perfect "Campbell hero story" and as such, is inspiring, interesting, and has lessons for us even in this far removed time. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I very much enjoyed the book but did find it a little hard to follow at times. The characters could use more development in my opinion as it is easy to get them confused. The story line is wonderful in dealing with the movement of humanity toward the Americas and deals with many questions that would come up in any discussion of the subject.

For folks interested in the pre-historical rise of humans in the western world, this will give them much to consider.

As a dramatic and personalizing application of historical possibilities, the authors have met the challenge well.
