Steven owes a debt he cannot repay by himself and he only has a few hours to come up with the money. The only solution is to take it, but the person Steven decides to rob becomes entangled in his problems. Now it’s a fight to survive.

This story was short and gritty. It reminded me of Breaking Bad with its in depth details on drug production, but within the low end of society. I was shocked at some of these details – like the druggie house. I felt like I learned a lot about drugs, drug runners, drug houses, etc. The story did get weighed down at times with these details, but they were fairly fascinating.

This short novel kept me in suspense and I had mild anxiety throughout the entire story as I waited to find out how the kidnapping would resolve. Would she make it out? Would she get the help she needed in time or would she figure a way out on her own? There were just enough obstacles to keep the plot realistic and moving forward.

Alone In The Darkness eBook Matthew Buza Reviews

Once the story got going, I couldn't put it down. Good level of suspense and excitement. Was rooting for the protagonist, but also sympathetic to the villains.
Reminds me of Henning Mankell.
Tense action and strong characterization kept me reading long past my bedtime. I really enjoyed this book!
Really good book! It's very graphic but I love that in a book. It's also set in my county and I loved that. Very suspenseful and held my interest very well.
i really did not see this going where it did. so many things happening that couldnt possibly have happened but did!

i loved thiss

a great read!
I bought this book to read during a flight, and I was able to finish it in a few hours, which filled most of the flight.

Overall, I felt captured by the individual stories of each character. The author was able to keep multiple narratives going simultaneously, but the story was still easy enough to follow. The problems encountered by each of the characters kept the suspense high throughout the book, which made it hard to put down. The intensity of the story grew throughout the novel, and the resolution didn't come until the final pages.

It was a little difficult to determine who was the main character, and I feel like partway through the book there was a big shift in the primary focus. This isn't a huge issue though - I don't think every story needs a "main" character, and it didn't detract from the overall experience.
It's hard to love the characters - drug addicts and dealers, but it's easy to get caught up in their world. Buza's in-depth look into the seedier side of the drug world draws you in and keeps you captive. The book is fast-paced and well-written. You will feel yourself pulled into a world few see and most fear, and you will find yourself sympathizing with a character who is flawed, but struggles to be better and to save himself.
Buza is a master of ratcheting up tension from scene to scene, page to page. Right at the start I felt a scary threat and, not knowing what the situation with Steven was, I made sure the pages turned fast to find out. When Steven snatched Jennifer, the fear factor went higher—especially with the car chase! The whole underworld of amateur drug dealers in out-of-the-way areas was described so well I had my eyes opened. The plot thickened but all the characters and happenings stayed clear so it was a good read all the way through. Danger got closer and darker with each chapter and having Jennifer the innocent center of the violence made it even more threatening. An enjoyably scary fast read! I loved the beautiful little poem that is the epigraph.
