Night Train to Rigel Quadrail Timothy Zahn Books
This is the first book of a quirky space opera/noir/zombie series. Unusual for Zahn, this book is written in first person, yet (surprisingly?) this doesn't have any detrimental effect on his ability to weave a complex plot with a sizable cast of characters. There's a lot of mystery, a lot of suspense, a fair bit of action, and some big surprises. It seems that some reviewers were a bit uptight about what type of book they thought that this should be, but it's a lot of fun if you just appreciate it for what it is.This book has no cliffhanger and, as far as I can tell, may have even been intended originally as a standalone book. In my opinion, the final book is the best in the series, this one is a close second, and the others are good but not outstanding. Despite the bit of inconsistency in quality in the series, I really love the setting and characters, and I'd love to see it continued someday.

Night Train to Rigel Quadrail Timothy Zahn Books Reviews
An exciting start to a intergalactic series. Bayta, spiders, Compton, and a Quadrail that spans the galaxy. Those along with a unique villein make for an enjoyable romp through our galaxy.
A lot of times I read a Timothy Zahn book in a matter of days. With this book it took me a few weeks. It just kind of drags along. Frank Compton is a kind of a fed up ex-operative who is definitely the best character in the story. Some of the people in it are really wooden. That is explained when we find out what's really going on. But Zahn takes too long to get there. The last 100 pages are entertaining, but I had to work hard to get to it. Don't be deceived by the title either. They never make it to Rigel. If you've never read any Zahn, I'd recommend you start with something like The Cobra Trilogy or Manta's Gift
A homage to noir PI movies set on trains such as North By Northwest, this fast-moving novel about a quick-witted protagonist, Frank Compton, is the first of 5 novels in a series, so if you like it as much as I, there's more where this came from! It's followed by THE THIRD LYNX; ODD GIRL OUT; THE DOMINO PATTERN; and JUDGEMENT AT PROTEUS. I have only read the first three so far, but I am looking forward the the rest.
If you like a book where you get all of the details and everything is laid out nice and neat for you... Then don't waste your time or money on this book. This is a straight up mystery book, and it's a darn good one at that! It gives you all of the details in a timely matter, and yet none of them click into place until the very end. No matter how long or hard you think about any aspect of the information this book gives you, it's nearly impossible for it to make sense until the end. Timothy Zahn really did write a masterful book with Night Train to Rigel.
I enjoyed this space opera, from beginning to end and never put it down for long. It's a fluffy story, sure enough, but the way Zahn structured it, I kept reading to find out what the latest twist was all about. I love the idea of a train to the stars---which is very H.G. Wells, but also hangs together on a point of theoretical physics---down to the connecting vestibules between the cars which I could easily visualize, coming as I do from a time when American passenger trains were more common than today. Perhaps because I'd never read any other Zahn adventure, I wasn't plagued by the comparison some other reviewers can't seem to help but make with his other books, which I will now go on to read, starting with the more popular The Icarus Hunt.
I liked the book. So much so, that I bought all the remaining books in the series.
Plots within plots, twists and turns you never see coming.
More of a detective mystery novel, than battle filled science fiction.
Looking forward to learning how the story continues, and what new mysteries arise.
A joy to read.
On to the next book in the series!
This book is driven by mystery. If you love secrets and conspiracies, if you get a thrill out of things not being what they seem, then you’ll love this book. It is future science-fiction with truly inventive tools and aliens, but the story is not tech driven. It’s a spy novel and a detective novel, set on space train. Yes that sounds cheesy, but it’s actually explained quite well in the book.
