A Frenchman, a disabled former employee of the Hudson Bay Company, is found murdered in his cabin in Dove River, Ontario, Canada. The year is 1867, it is the start of winter, and soon there are many people looking for the murderer.A 17 year-old young man disappears the same night of the murder and soon his mother and a tracker are on his trail.
I liked this story - for the most part. Or I should write that I liked parts of it. For one thing there are way too many unneeded characters involved in the story. That might be one reason that the book is overlong. It would have been much better if the author kept just one main plot throughout the book but instead there are many branches and dead ends.
I liked the character of Mrs. Lucie Ross, the mother of the young man who has disappeared. She doesn't let anything get in the way of finding her son. There are other memorable characters and some who are easily forgotten. Canada in the wintertime is a huge part of the story. And I love books about snow and cold so that was a plus for me.
I'm not sorry that I read this book. I just think it could have been much better with a heavy-handed editor.

The author's compositional and writing skills can't be faulted, and are impressive for a first novel. However, character development never grows beyond the compositional surface of the story, which is largely defined by a number of plot threads typical of the mystery genre, some of which remain very tangential. Nor did I find the blending of genres -- historical, romance, mystery -- completely successful, beyond the limited basis of a minimal story.
Another reader compared this to a screenplay, and while that is not entirely justified, I understand the analogy the narrative stays very much at the surface and thus, while intellectually engaging, fails to become fully satisfying. That this won one of Britain's most prestigious literary awards seems inexplicable, as this novel is not particularly memorable.
This is what it's all about a terrific story, well told! That's a rare combination. Thank you Ms. Penny; I devoured it much too quickly!
The complexity of the murder mystery is a gripping tale, with the wilds of the Canadian outback as much a presence as the larger than life characters. I couldn't put it down. Just thought the ending was disappointingly abrupt. But still a very good read.
The Tenderness of Wolves A Novel
Stef Penney creates a frozen rural setting in which the characters struggle to unfreeze even their feelings. Set in the cold north of the 1860s, "The Tenderness of Wolves" is a slow-paced thriller dealing with a murder in the time way before CSI, or even formal police departments. A number of parties are interested in tracking down the killer of a reclusive trapper, and all of them have ulterior motives. The story started out a little slowly at first, and I almost put it down, until I remembered that my own story, "Neitherworld" starts out slowly as well, and like Wolves, then heats up. An interesting twist to the narrative form is the way Penney tells the story in first person in some chapters and then, when the main character could not know certain things because she is not present, switches to third person. Be prepared to develop sympathy for the characters only over time. This is NOT a lapel-grabber - it is a thoughtful journey with sorrow, deep tragedies, and redemptions. It is, in other words, in the old tradition of great literature.
I've read this unique and well-written book three times. The subject and location (a murder in 1860s Northern Territory) are fascinating. I loved the women characters. They're strong and deep-thinking. I'll be reading it again in a couple of years.
Honestly, this is one of the finest, best told and written sagas I've ever read. It is certainly a page-turner. Reading at night, I've had to force myself to put it down to sleep. The elements of the story and bits developing the personalities are exquisitely inserted such that they are profound yet don't even hiccup in the plot. The character developments are expertly done you only realize you are married to each at some point deep in the plot. Social complexities are well developed as well. Each time I reluctantly put the book down, what I read lingers in my thoughts long after. That is a characteristic of a really profound book. It's a stunner! I'll be thinking about it for years to come.
I'm definitely following this author and looking forward to reading her works.
I learned of 'The Tenderness of Wolves' through word of mouth. I can't recommend this unusual book enough!
Somehow, I'm a sucker for North American set historic fiction. Local settings often carry mysteries easily overlooked. The Tenderness of Wolves is a really engaging read that exploits exactly that kind of setting. The author exhibits some of the most lyrical writing I've read in some time and an uncanny ability with multiple viewpoints to lead me without distracting my focus. Her understanding of the period an of the locales is evident throughout. The presentation of the core set of mysteries played out in the twists of the story, is clear and very compelling. At the same time, the characters are each unique and completely knowable. The author's facility with revelatory and introspective thoughts by various characters is intimate and familiar. Each question is answered in naturally occurring turns and some unexpected twists. I really loved this book and only rose a few times while reading it. I look forward to the next one.
